November in Leeds

What's big in November (in Leeds)

Leeds is 800.

Happy birthday Leeds! Leeds is officially 800 years old this month. In 1207, landowner Maurice de Paynel wanted to kickstart trade and generate wealth in his borough. His charter established a new town close to the river Aire – on the “road to the bridge”, or Briggate. To this day, the plots of land rented out to craftsmen and traders shape the city's arcades and trading is still going strong! The charter was signed “on the morrow of the feast of St Martin” - 12 November. Throughout the month, special events will celebrate this historical landmark for our city.

Words At War

A literature festival at the Royal Armouries Museum featuring readings and performance events curated by Royal Armouries Writter-in-Residence Peter Spafford. The festival's theme is the relationship between words and war: how war is converted into fiction, poetry, film, and song, and how words are all we have when we want to make peace.
